D1 Pre-competition day

Next we had the challenge of figuring out how to use the wheel in a working mechanism - it involved a lot of sketching and discussion.
After creating a prototype from scrap (as shown above, involving a wheel on a pole, hanging from strings that wound up as the wheel is rotated, storing energy for when it is released), we started to sketch out and discuss various ways of using it in a more complex mechanism.

Here we started to properly draw out the plan for the mechanism... which made the problems with it much clearer! There was an issue with the wheel moving vertically as it rotated - an inflexible bicycle chain or standard cog couldn't withstand this sort of movement.
